Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is it easier to get registration to locum or to work as a permanent GP?

The process to get specialist registration to work as a GP locum is exactly the same as the process to work in a permanent role. This pathway is complex and takes approximately six months, however we have the experience and knowledge to guide you through this and make the process stress free so you can plan your new life. We will advise you of the required documentation so that you can collate it and avoid delays, and we’ll give you a gentle reminder if you’ve missed anything.
  • Will I need to complete an English language test to work in Australia?

If you completed your secondary education and your medical degree in English you shouldn’t need to complete an English Language exam. You can find more information on the Australian Medical Council website.
  • How long will it take to get registered in Australia?

The registration process for Overseas Trained Doctors is variable. Factors influencing the time frame and the process include where you trained, your post graduate qualifications and your experience. A specialist application takes approximately six months. You can find more information on the Australian Medical Council website.
  • Will there be any restrictions placed on where I can work in Australia?

Any GP who is a FRNZCGP can be a GP locum in Australia, and GP’s who are NZ trained can locum anywhere in Australia. The Department of Health and Ageing places a restriction on other Overseas Trained Doctors, meaning that in most cases an overseas trained GP would be required to work in a District Workforce Shortage (DWS).  This may be in the cities, and also includes locations further afield. More information about the DWS can be found at www.doctorconnect.gov.au .
  • What sort of income should I expect to earn in Australia?

As a GP locum, rates vary depending on the position offered.

In a GP role that’s Monday - Friday 8am until 5pm, you can expect to earn between $900 - $1,500 (AUD) per day.

As a GP locum FRACGP with VMO rights or, as a GP/ ED Senior Medical Officer, you can expect to earn $2,000 (AUD) per day.

As a GP with procedural skills (e.g., JCCA) you can earn up to $2,500 (AUD) per 24 hours.
