Medical Registration
An International Medical Graduate is someone who has gained their primary medical qualification outside of Australia or New Zealand. There are several pathways to registration in Australia and you must confirm your eligibility for one of these pathways to be able to apply for work through MedRecruit.
Specialist Pathway
Eligible for registration as a specialist, conditional Area of Need Specialist or specialist in training
- Completed a specialist training program in another country, with a comparable health system to Australia.
You are then eligible to have your qualifications assessed by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners or Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine. They will then determine what (if any) additional requirements they wish you to undertake to gain fellowship in Australia.
Generally speaking, if you have completed specialist GP training in the UK, Ireland, NZ or Canada then you will be eligible for registration as a full specialist in Australia. If you have completed specialist GP training in one of the following countries; Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden or USA; then your qualification is considered partially comparable to Australia.
Competent Authority Pathway
Eligible for ‘Advanced Standing’ with the AMC and conditional registration:
- Have a primary degree from the UK, Ireland, NZ, United States or Canada
- Or have completed the equivalent licensing exams (such as PLAB I and II, NZREX, USMLE or LMCC)
- Have completed a full year of supervised practice in the same country you got your primary degree or where you sat your exams, whichever is applicable, and you are eligible for full registration with that licensing authority. Please note that USMLE requires two years of supervised practice.
AMC Standard Pathway (AMC Examination)
If you don’t fall into either of these categories but you do have a medical degree from a medical school listed in the WHO directory, then you will need to complete AMC examinations which involve an MCQ and a clinical examination. You will also need to complete the IELTS English exam.
If you have to gain registration this way then MedRecruit is not able to assist you to get a GP job until you have BOTH AMC MCQ and IELTS, you must have at least 5 years GP experience overseas also.
